Area 3

In 1999, the United Stated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began RI/FS investigations in the Area 3. The purpose of the RI/FS is to determine the nature and extent of soil and groundwater contamination and to identify likely sources. Future work includes the installation of additional monitoring wells in order to collect additional data to assess the extent of the contamination and its relationship to suspected source areas.

The area volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination has impacted a number of the City of Alhambra’s wells. The City is in the process of designing a treatment system to address this issue. The prescribed remedy includes the construction of VOC treatment facilities at the Well No. 8 site. The new treatment facility will be designed to treat groundwater produced from Well Nos. 7, 8, 11 and 12.

The San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority has help fund the City’s treatment facilities.

For additional information, please see Appendix A in WQA’s Groundwater Quality Management and Remediation Plan (406 Plan).
