AREA 3

The San Gabriel Valley (Area 3) site is a 19-square-mile area with isolated sections of contaminated groundwater. In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) to determine the nature and extent of soil and groundwater contamination, identify likely sources, and evaluate cleanup options.

Volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination in the area has impacted a number of wells owned by the City of Alhambra. The San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority (WQA) helped fund the City’s treatment plant, which has been operating since 2008. The plant removes VOCs and industrial solvents from the drinking water supply produced from Wells 7, 8, 11 and 12.

The EPA expects to complete the identification and characterization of the contaminated groundwater in 2019.
