Ed was born and raised in La Puente, the youngest of seven children. Ed graduated from Bassett High School in 1981 and later received an Associate of Arts degree from Rio Hondo College. He also worked his way through school while earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California-Los Angeles in 1989. Ed continued his education by earning a High School Teaching Credential from Claremont Graduate University and an Adult Teaching Credential from California State University-Los Angeles. He has spent most of his career as an educator in the San Gabriel Valley having taught at Bassett Adult School, Pioneer High School, Claremont High School and in the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District.

In addition to his service as an educator, Ed has served the San Gabriel Valley on the staffs of State Assembly Members Martin Gallegos and Sally Tanner, as an elected Member and President of the Bassett Unified School District’s Board of Education and as a Councilman and Mayor of the City of La Puente.

In 2000, Ed was elected to the California State Assembly where he served for six years before his term expired. In the State Assembly he held a number of leadership positions including Chair of the Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media Committee, Chair of Veterans Affairs, Chair of Indian Nations, Chair of Revenue and Taxation, and as Chair and Founder of the San Gabriel Valley Legislative Caucus.

In 2008, Ed was elected to the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District’s Board of Directors. He has been a leader on water issues as a member of the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority, Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster as well as other boards and associations.

Ed is married to Renee Chavez who also served on the La Puente City Council in her position as a Councilwoman and Mayor. Ed continues to live in the same home that he grew up in with his wife Renee and their son Robert.
